Sustainability literacy
At CUT, sustainability literacy is systematically cultivated and evaluated through a dual-layered assessment approach embedded in sustainability-themed modules across disciplines. Formative assessments—such as iterative feedback, group discussions, and reflective exercises—support ongoing learning, while summative evaluations test students’ ability to analyse real-world sustainability dilemmas and propose evidence-based, ethically grounded solutions.
A hallmark of this process is the integration of applied, project-based learning, where students design context-sensitive interventions (e.g., circular economy models, energy-efficient systems, or inclusive urban strategies), demonstrating not only knowledge retention but also systems thinking and critical engagement. Assessment criteria explicitly align with SDG-related competencies—including interdisciplinarity, future orientation, and responsibility—ensuring learning outcomes go beyond awareness to actionable understanding.
To complement course-level evaluation, CUT has developed data-driven tools that map sustainability-related research outputs and funded projects across the university, enabling longitudinal tracking of curricular and research impact. These tools—recognised as Good Practice by the European Commission and adopted by the EUt⁺ alliance—provide transparent, comparable metrics for institutional sustainability literacy.
Together, pedagogical practice and analytical infrastructure ensure that sustainability competencies are learned, applied, assessed, and evidenced—fulfilling the spirit of SDG 4.7 on education for sustainable development and global citizenship.
