Students hunger interventions
CUT implements a robust set of interventions to prevent and alleviate hunger among students, ensuring access to food support and essential resources through dedicated welfare programmes, external collaborations, and student-led initiatives.
Free Meals Programme- Holy Metropolis of Limassol
Since 2014, CUT has partnered with the Holy Metropolis of Limassol to provide free daily lunches to students experiencing food insecurity and socio-economic hardship.
Each academic year, approximately 30% of the student population benefit from the programme, with over 1,000 students receiving balanced meals discreetly and without stigma, based on principles of social solidarity, dignity, and respect.
CUT actively supports the programme through the Student Welfare Association, contributing to its operational continuity through:
- Funding the employment of a kitchen assistant to support daily meal preparation.
- Purchasing essential kitchen equipment and supplies for the continuation of the food assistance initiative.
- Acquiring a professional oven and related accessories to meet the operational needs of the Metropolis’ meal programme.

Partnership with AlphaMega Supermarkets
CUT collaborates with AlphaMega Supermarkets to supply monthly food and hygiene packages to 20 resident students facing socio-economic difficulties.
This initiative supports basic food security and wellbeing in on-campus housing.

Collaboration with KEPAKY
Through cooperation with KEPAKY (Andreas Sofocleous Centre for Social Services), vulnerable CUT students receive:
- Weekly food provision in university housing
- Additional food and essentials for students and families living off campus
This strengthens community-based support and complements University welfare efforts.

Student-Led Food Support Initiatives
The CUT Student Union organises food collection and redistribution campaigns, providing emergency support to students in need and fostering a culture of solidarity among peers.
Affordable Access to Food
To prevent hunger through affordability measures:
- The University cafeteria (Zorbas Ltd) offers snacks and light meals at low, university-approved prices, with regular monitoring of both cost and quality by CUT to ensure fair and affordable access to food for all students.
- Local businesses across Limassol provide special student discounts on food and essential items, further improving affordability and daily access to meals in the city centre.
See an indicative list of discounts and the corresponding electronic guide
- CUT employees receive a 3% discount at Sklavenitis Supermarkets, supporting community-wide access to essential food products.
These coordinated interventions ensure that students facing economic hardship have continuous access to food, directly preventing hunger and reducing the risk of food insecurity.
They reflect CUT’s institutional commitment to equity, social inclusion, and the principles of UN SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
