Promoting conscious water usage in the wider community
CUT actively promotes conscious water usage in the wider community through educational outreach, youth engagement, and targeted dissemination of scientific knowledge. These activities extend the University’s impact beyond campus boundaries and contribute to national efforts supporting responsible and sustainable water practices.
Participation at the 2024 European Researchers’ Night- Collaboration between WTL-AQUA and CYWP (27/09/2024)
On 27 September 2024, the Cyprus Young Water Professionals and the Water Treatment Laboratory- AQUA (WTL-AQUA) participated in the European Researchers’ Night in Nicosia. The activity, titled “Water Wizards: Dive into the World of Water Treatment,” featured a small-scale water treatment plant constructed by CUT undergraduate students under the guidance of Dr. Maria G. Antoniou. The model demonstrated key treatment stages- including sieving, coagulation, sedimentation, rapid sand and activated carbon filtration, and chlorination- educating the public on how water treatment is performed in Cyprus. Colorimetric reactions were used to illustrate simple water-quality monitoring techniques, while actions of the Cyprus Water Association and the Young Water Professionals were also presented. Mentoring Teams for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (01/01/2024–20/04/2024)
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) is a prestigious international competition for students aged 15-20 who develop innovative research projects addressing major global water challenges. The prize aims to increase youth interest in water-related issues and to encourage future leaders to create solutions for a more water-secure world. CUT academics mentored secondary-school student teams participating in the 2024 national competition and also served on the jury committee, thereby supporting the development of youth-led water solutions and strengthening awareness of the importance of sustainable water management. Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence Showcases Agri NexusHub at Cyprus Water Management Event (03/12/2024)
On 3 December 2024, members of the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence- Mr. Stelios Neophytides and Dr. Marinos Eliades- participated in the event “Visualising Cyprus Water Management Strategies,” organised by Chrysalis LEAP. During the event, Stelios Neophytides presented the Agri NexusHub, an innovative tool developed by the Big Earth Data Analytics Department in collaboration with CUT’s Water Research Cluster. The tool provides daily calculations of reference and crop evapotranspiration, offering data-driven insights that support farmers, agricultural companies, and local authorities in optimising irrigation and improving water-resource management. Through these targeted outreach initiatives, CUT actively promotes conscious water usage in the wider community, strengthening public understanding, youth engagement, and stakeholder capacity for sustainable water management. These actions reinforce CUT’s contribution to SDG 6 and to national water- conservation priorities.
