Carbon reduction and emission reduction process
CUT is dedicated to addressing climate change through education, research, and operational sustainability. Its strategic goal is to achieve zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, offering exemplary practices for organisations, cities, and regions to follow. The plan emphasises the importance of reducing emissions across three key scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from facilities and vehicles.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy.
- Scope 3: Indirect emissions from activities such as commuting, waste, and procurement.
(A) Reducing Emissions Across Scopes
Reducing emissions across the three scopes is targeted through the following actions:
Scope 1 Actions:
- Transitioning the university’s vehicle fleet to low-emission alternatives.
- Phasing out boilers and generators in favor of low-carbon systems.
- Upgrading air conditioning and refrigeration units to reduce GHG output.
Target: Fully mitigate Scope 1 emissions by 2030.
Scope 2 Actions:
- Developing a photovoltaic park to offset emissions from electricity usage, reducing reliance on the national grid.
Target: Achieve zero Scope 2 emissions by 2030, with renewable energy implementation by 2025.
Scope 3 Actions:
- Establishing policies to reduce emissions from professional travel and daily commutes.
- Promoting tree-planting initiatives to offset unavoidable travel emissions.
- Reducing waste and adopting sustainable procurement practices for goods like paper and food packaging.
Target: Neutralise Scope 3 emissions by 2050.
(B) Governance and Implementation
The university’s emission reduction plan is coordinated by the Environmental Policy Office, and the Sustainability Education, Research, and Development Team. These entities oversee implementation, monitor progress, and adjust strategies to meet emission goals. Working groups focus on specific challenges, such as waste reduction and transportation emissions.
(C) Education, Research, and Partnerships
Education is central to CUT’s strategy, equipping stakeholders with knowledge and skills to support emission reduction efforts. Collaborations with research institutions enhance innovation and practical solutions. CUT’s practices align with SDG 13 (Climate Action), emphasising sustainable development and climate resilience.
(D) Roadmap to Net-Zero
The roadmap targets net-zero emissions by:
- 2030: Eliminating Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
- 2050: Achieving neutrality across all scopes.
Through data-driven approaches, innovative practices, and a clear timeline, CUT demonstrates leadership in creating a sustainable, low-carbon future.
