  • Title: Mind the Mum: Placing Parental Mental Health and Care to the Forefront
  • Acronym: Mind the Mum
  • Funding framework: EU4HEALTH
  • Abstract: Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are periods of significant change by women, and their Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) may be influenced by complex socio ecological factors, related to their individual characteristics and circumstances, family and support environment and culture, systemic and cultural factors in the healthcare system and the service delivery process.
Working with a transcultural and multidisciplinary team of experts and grassroot activists, and learning from past experience of other partners in their own countries, we seek to address two major needs/gaps in Cyprus and Slovenia: (1) the need to understand (through systematic monitoring and recording) how the perinatal period is experienced by women, and how their PMH experience may relate to specific risk and protective factors  (2) the need to produce and contextualize tools and advocate for systemic changes for equipping new mothers with skills and choices to safeguard their PMH.

  • Title: Simulation-Based Imaging: A New Tool for Revolutionizing the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease
  • Acronym: SBI-Cardio
  • Funding framework: EU HORIZON EUROPE/ MSCA
  • Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) like heart attacks and strokes require precise diagnosis and treatment planning. Traditional 4D Flow MRI, while valuable, is limited by the trade-off between resolution, image quality and scan time. Current methods achieve only moderate resolution and take about 10 minutes per scan. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the SBI-Cardio project aims to overcome these limitations using simulation-based imaging (SBI). By integrating computational fluid dynamics with low-resolution 4D Flow MRI data, SBI can generate high-resolution velocity fields. This novel method promises ultra-high-resolution images and faster scan times, revolutionising CVD diagnosis and treatment, leading to more accurate clinical decisions and improved patient outcomes.
The 3D, time-resolved blood flow measurement technique known as 4D Flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is highly valuable for research and can play a crucial role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) diagnosis and treatment planning. However, it is limited by the fundamental trade-off between resolution, image quality, and scan time since current 4D Flow MRI methods use compressed sensing or spatiotemporal acceleration to achieve only a spatial resolution of 1-3mm and temporal resolution of 25-100ms in a scan time of ~10 minutes. To overcome this challenge, simulation-based imaging (SBI) may provide a method to augment 4D flow MRI data by fitting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to low-resolution and noisy 4D Flow MRI data.
The primary objective of SBI is to generate a high-resolution velocity field by optimizing the simulation to closely match the available data. This approach overcomes the aforementioned limitations of 4D Flow MRI, which often suffers from inherent errors in resolution and scan time, leading to both quantitative and qualitative discrepancies. By utilizing SBI, a more precise and comprehensive visualization of blood flow can be achieved.
Therefore, the ultimate goal of this project is to develop a novel SBI method for MRI that will be used to address a wide range of cardiovascular (CVDs) such as heart attacks, strokes, and congenital heart defects; providing high-quality images of structure and function with ultra-high resolution and fast scan time. The long-term impact of the proposed SBI framework is expected to revolutionize clinical diagnosis and surgical decision-making leading to more effective treatments and improved outcomes for CVD patients..

  • Title: Restorative Effects of Haptic and Visual Sensory Supplementation of Nature Sounds in VR of Nature for Deaf people
  • Acronym: ReSens
  • Funding framework: EU HORIZON EUROPE
  • Abstract: Exposure to nature and its sounds can relieve from stress, promote relaxation, and restore cognition. These restorative benefits persist even with exposure to Virtual Reality (VR) of nature and its calming sounds. It is the combination of visual and auditory exposure to these VR environments and their sounds that promotes restorative effects for hearing people. This means that Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (HoH) people may be excluded from being able to receive the same restorative benefits that hearing people receive. Evidence shows that there can be cross-modal transfer in HoH people, whereby speech and sounds can be perceived and understood through vibrations on the skin or can be localised via visual cues in VR technologies.Through the ‘ReSens-Nature’ project, the Fellow will develop a novel VR experience, through which he will examine the restorative effects of vibrotactile and visual sensory supplementation of nature sounds in VR nature environments for Deaf/ HoH people. The objectives are to (i) Develop and establish the usability of this novel VR nature environment that uses vibrotactile and visual supplementation of nature sounds, (ii) Examine whether this novel VR nature environment is providing restorative benefits to Deaf/ HoH people in comparison to a regular VR nature environment without sensory supplementation and in comparison to hearing people. Understanding the effects of sensory supplementation for Deaf/ HoH in VR nature environments could help make VR and other technologies more inclusive for Deaf/ HoH people and people with other disabilities.

The project aims to establish a scientific basis for pediatric screening of Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) across Europe, positively impacting affected individuals, families, and healthcare systems strained post-pandemic. Led by a diverse consortium—FH Europe Foundation (coordinator), EuroScan (Germany), Cyprus University of Technology, InnoMed (Romania), and EPHA (Belgium)—the project combines expertise in healthcare, social sciences, and participatory research. Collaborating with FH Europe (https://fheurope.org/), it aligns with SDGs 3, 10, and 16.

Strategic Actions

Establishment of the Public Health Research Unit

The Cyprus University of Technology has taken the initiative to establish a Public Health Research Unit and is requesting the amendment of the 2017 and 2018 Regulations concerning the Establishment of Research Units. This amendment includes the addition of the Public Health Research Unit to Regulation 2. The purpose of establishing this unit is to address issues related to public and environmental health, as well as scientific specialties associated with the prevention, control, and investigation of health risk factors and the emergence of diseases in the population of Cyprus and vulnerable subgroups, such as children. This matter is currently being examined by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus.

The Public Health Research Unit will provide annual expertise services that will directly benefit the community on matters of public and environmental health, with primary collaborators being the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment. Among its activities will be the analysis and interpretation of spatio-temporal trends of recorded cancer cases and the creation of an annual report for the Cancer Registry and the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health, as well as health monitoring programs for vulnerable subgroups, such as primary school children, for early detection of health indicators. Additionally, it will organize training and education programs for specific groups of health professionals from various Departments of relevant Ministries.

European Observatory on Femicide (EOF)

A significant and enduring collaboration that emerged from efforts across Europe is the establishment of the European Observatory on Femicide (EOF), a network of research teams spanning countries in Europe and Israel. The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is an active partner in the Observatory, with its coordination rotating among the member partners.

The Department of Nursing serves as the national representative in the European Transcultural Nursing Association (ETNA). ETNA promotes collaboration among its members and experts, fostering the exchange of ideas to advance research and education in transcultural nursing. The Association emphasizes equitable, high-quality care, respect for human rights, and culturally competent practices within a holistic framework. It addresses the socio-cultural diversity of individuals living in an increasingly interconnected global community.

Opportunities for Sports, Wellness, and Recreation

The Cyprus University of Technology offers students and all members of the university community a variety of opportunities for sports and recreation. A dynamic program, renewed annually, caters not only to individuals who are accustomed to engaging in physical activity but also to those seeking inspiration to start exercising and explore new activities. The program’s philosophy emphasizes introducing the community to less popular sports and activities, particularly those related to the sea and the beach, that promote health and well-being. Counseling and Student Development Center at the University

The Cyprus University of Technology places great importance on supporting students who need guidance, assistance, and help with a variety of social, psychological, and learning-related issues. The Center provides support on topics such as counseling and psychotherapy, disabilities and chronic illnesses, dyslexia and learning difficulties, tutorial support, academic success, substance use prevention, and more. Academic staff can also seek assistance from the Counseling Center for any required support.

The Student Development Center is open to all students, offering the opportunity to discuss and develop practical solutions in collaboration with a reliable network of qualified and experienced professionals. Current collaborations with health institutions

CUT is a pioneer of driving bottom-up change both locally and nationally through several strategic partnerships with NGOs and grassroots organisations regarding:

  • Education, e.g. co-development of an education program on Patient Triage with the Pancyprian Association of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Practice, e.g. policy advisory role of CUT academics regarding maternal and neonatal health, patient satisfaction, the General Healthcare System and the National Strategy for Mental Health.
  • Research, e.g. co-development of clinical protocols and co-founder of Cardiac patients’, Anticancer, Stroke, Atherosclerosis, Epidemiology and Public Health, and Psychologists Associations.
  • Outreach, e.g. partnership with the Ministry of Health to redesign School Health Services in the Post-Pandemic Era.

Globally, CUT is the national representative of the European Public Health Association, holds the presidency of the European Cancer Organisation and participates in the European Lifestyle Medicine Organisation.

Health outreach programmes

CUT actively engages in community outreach through open-lectures, seminars, workshops, and events, targeting both health professionals and the broader public. Collaborating with public sector entities (e.g. Ministry of Health, public hospitals), professional and patient associations (e.g. Nurses and Midwifes, Alzheimer’s), NGOs, and local schools, the University organises various activities. Highlights include a rheumatic disease awareness campaign in rural areas, mental health education for primary school students, and events on obesity, elder abuse screening, and equality in health. Additional initiatives address specific community needs, such as training professionals to combat female genital mutilation. Activities are regularly announced on the CUT news page.

Sexual and reproductive health care services for students

The Department of Nursing offers an MSc program in Midwifery and leads research in maternal, sexual, and reproductive health, working with government bodies and NGOs to impact national policy and community health programs. Key activities include:

  • Policy Influence: CUT participates in national committees to promote breastfeeding and reduce Caesarean sections, addressing key health issues in Cyprus.
  • Research: The RESPECT project focuses on improving maternity care quality through a national survey and participatory research, promoting “Respectful Maternity Care” based on
    WHO standards.
  • Outreach: The Baby Buddy app, co-managed with Birth Forward, supports Cypriot pregnant women and new parents, with a global reach through YouTube.

CUT also promotes student sexual and reproductive health through workshops e.g. “SEX Talk” and “Healthy Relationships”, and offers practical support like a dedicated breastfeeding room,  the first of its kind in Cyprus, to enhance maternal health rights.

Mental health support for students

The Center of Student Development provides mental health counselling and self-development services for enrolled students, addressing concerns such as relationship management, stress coping, time management, and sexual health education. The Center also offers HIV testing and psychoeducation on safe sex practices. For students requiring further psychological services, referrals are made to other mental health professionals via the national health system or private sector.

The Department of Nursing also launches several initiatives to promote mental health awareness and combat stigma. These include integrating Experts by Experience into the Mental Health Nursing curriculum, allowing students to learn directly from those with lived experiences of mental health challenges. Additionally, the university organises public awareness campaigns and partners with NGOs like Antifon to conduct research, co-host events, and educate both students and healthcare professionals on mental health issues.

Smoke-free policy

CUT is firmly committed to maintaining a smoke-free environment and ensuring a safe and healthy atmosphere for everyone on campus. In compliance with the provisions of the relevant National and European Laws, the University has established and implements a written no- smoking policy across all its building facilities. This policy is based on the principle that staff, students, and third parties who do not smoke or do not wish to be exposed to smoke are protected from the harmful effects of smoking.

Mental health support for staff

CUT in collaboration with the Department of Nursing launches a number of innovative activities targeting the wider university community, including academic and administration staff, with the aim of addressing mental health stigma and raising awareness on the importance of mental well-being. In 2023, key initiatives include:

  1. Speed Dating with an Expert: A session where participants could engage with mental health professionals (from within and outside CUT) to discuss mental health issues, ask questions, and dispel myths.
  2. Film Screening: A public viewing of A Sofa in Tunisia for World Mental Health Day, followed by a discussion on mental health stigma with students and staff.
  3. Conference on Psychotherapeutic Arts: A one-day event featuring seminars and workshops, where participants expressed emotions through painting, exploring the psychotherapeutic impact of art.

These activities aimed to foster open communication about mental health and provide a platform for the university community to engage in mental health promotion.
