Strategic Actions / Operations
Recruitment, Equal Pay and Gender-Responsive Remuneration Framework
CUT upholds a comprehensive Equal Opportunity Policy across all academic and administrative recruitment processes, ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and non-discrimination at every career stage. In addition, CUT ensures equal pay for equal work through a transparent and gender-neutral remuneration system fully aligned with national labour legislation, Cyprus public-sector salary scales, and international standards on pay equity. All academic and administrative positions follow the official public pay structure, guaranteeing identical remuneration for the same rank (e.g., all Associate Professors under scales A14–A15), while COLA adjustments and national salary increases are applied uniformly. For employment categories outside the public scales- such as Research Associates, Special Scientists, and Teaching Assistants- CUT implements structured internal frameworks to uphold fair and equitable treatment. Pay equity is further reinforced through the CUT Equality Plan 2022-2024 and the University’s participation in the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R), ensuring transparent, merit-based, and gender-balanced remuneration across all staff categories.
Diversity and Inclusion Office
The Diversity and Inclusion Office serves as CUT’s central operational mechanism for integrating equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into institutional policy, governance, and everyday practice. Reporting directly to the Rector and supported by dedicated administrative staff, the Office coordinates strategic and educational initiatives that promote respect, representation, and an inclusive culture across the university community.
Its mission is to advance awareness, eliminate bias, and embed diversity at all levels of university life. The Office supports the implementation of the University’s Equality Plan and the Equal Access Plan for Persons with Disabilities, and develops institutional tools—such as the Inclusive Language Guide—to ensure that principles of inclusivity and equal opportunities are systematically incorporated into all CUT operations.
Equality Committee
The Equality Committee is a formal advisory body to the Rector, tasked with advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion across all dimensions of CUT’s operations. Its work enhances the University’s institutional capacity to implement effective equality policies and strengthen a culture of fairness and representation.
The Committee’s mandate is structured around three key pillars:
- Policy development: advising the Rectorate on equality and inclusion strategies, ensuring alignment with national and EU legislation.
- Consultation and coordination: working closely with university services, committees, working groups, and external bodies to promote coherent institutional action and the exchange of best practices.
- Awareness and education: fostering inclusive attitudes, gender balance, and diversity within both academic and administrative communities.
In collaboration with the Diversity and Inclusion Office, the Committee contributes to the design, implementation, and evaluation of equality-focused initiatives and institutional action plans.
Anti-Harassment Framework and Code of Practice
CUT implements a robust institutional framework to prevent and address bullying, harassment, and sexual harassment across all university operations. The Code of Practice to Prevent and Combat Bullying, Sexual Harassment, and Harassment, aligned with national and EU legislation, applies to all staff, students, and external collaborators. It clearly defines prohibited behaviours, outlines reporting and response procedures, and ensures confidentiality, fairness, and protection against retaliation.
The Code is integrated into the Equality Plan 2022-2024, reinforcing gender equality, awareness, and the University’s zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and misconduct. Implementation is further supported by the Student Ombud, an independent body providing confidential guidance, mediation, and impartial resolution of complaints. Together, these mechanisms safeguard dignity, equity, and human rights within the CUT community.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Evaluation Survey
In September 2024, CUT conducted a comprehensive Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Evaluation Survey among students and staff to assess perceptions, experiences, and needs related to gender equality and inclusion. The survey served as a key evidence base for the development of the upcoming Equality Action Plan 2025-2028, ensuring that institutional planning reflects the lived realities of the university community.
Women’s Personality Award
Since 2021, CUT has annually honoured outstanding female members of the university community through the Women’s Personality Award. The award recognises excellence, leadership, and meaningful social contribution while highlighting challenges faced by women in academia and beyond. By celebrating role models and increasing women’s visibility, CUT reinforces its commitment to gender equality, empowerment, and the promotion of inclusive institutional culture.
Breastfeeding Room and Reproductive Health Support Infrastructure
CUT provides a dedicated, fully equipped breastfeeding and breast-milk pumping room, the first such facility established in a public organisation in Cyprus (since 2023). This permanent infrastructure supports reproductive rights, promotes maternal and child health, and ensures a safe and accommodating environment for breastfeeding mothers—preceding the 2025 national legislation mandating such facilities in workplaces.
CUT Awarded for Excellence in Gender Equality Practices in the Workplace
CUT has been recognized by the National Certification Body for Businesses and Organizations for its implementation of best practices promoting gender equality in the workplace. CUT received certification for a total of eleven (11) best practices, which include the establishment of a Gender Equality Action Plan, recruitment and promotion processes, training policies, equal pay initiatives, flexible working hours, policies supporting breastfeeding through flexible work schedules and teleworking, teleworking policies for employees with sick children, and a summer school program for employees’ children
Outreach
Participation in National Committees on Maternal and Reproductive Health
CUT actively contributes to national policy development in sexual and reproductive health through representation in key Ministry of Health committees, including the National Committee for the Promotion of Breastfeeding, the National Committee for the Reduction of Caesarean Sections, and the Advisory Committee of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Accreditation Programme. Through this engagement, CUT helps shape national strategies that promote gender equality, maternal health rights, and respectful maternity care.
Baby Buddy Cyprus Webapp & Baby Buddy Forward YouTube Channel
CUT manages the multi-award-winning Baby Buddy Cyprus digital platform, a free, multilingual educational webapp co-created with scientific associations and NGOs to promote reproductive rights, maternal health literacy, and informed decision-making for expectant and new parents. With nationwide reach and around 1,000 new annual registrations, the platform provides evidence-based guidance from early pregnancy to the postpartum period. Its complementary Baby Buddy Forward YouTube Channel extends this outreach through audiovisual educational content accessible to diverse communities.

- nationwide RESPECT workshops open to the public, focusing on respectful maternity care;
- and interactive workshops for pregnant women and new parents supporting empowerment, health literacy, and informed decision-making.
Training: “Empowerment Against Sexual Harassment at the Workplace”
In collaboration with the Center for Social Innovation (CSI Cyprus), CUT delivered specialised training to members of the Equality Committee to strengthen institutional capacity in preventing and addressing sexual harassment. The session highlighted national and EU legal frameworks, employer responsibilities, and best practices for managing incidents and fostering a workplace culture grounded in respect and gender equality.
Workshop: “Deconstructing Stereotypes and Biases through Inclusive Communication”
The Diversity and Inclusion Office delivered an interactive workshop for CUT staff focused on identifying unconscious bias and promoting inclusive communication practices. Drawing on the University’s Inclusive Language Guide, participants explored how language shapes gender perceptions and learned practical approaches to ensuring equitable and respectful communication in academic and administrative contexts.
Workshop: “Creating Accessible and Inclusive Spaces”
CUT organised an interactive workshop introducing students to principles of inclusive design and accessibility in physical and digital environments. Through real-life examples and collaborative problem-solving, students examined barriers to inclusion and proposed improvements that support participation and belonging. The workshop fostered awareness of gender-sensitive accessibility considerations and encouraged student engagement in advancing equality across campus spaces.

2020

CA19122 – European Network For Gender Balance in Informatics (EUGAIN)
