Outreach projects for the local community

CUT actively designs, coordinates and delivers a wide range of outreach initiatives supporting education, health awareness, information services, professional training and community engagement for the wider society. Through the coordinated efforts of its faculties, research centres, academic units and central services, CUT systematically shares knowledge and expertise beyond the campus, strengthening its contribution to social inclusion, lifelong learning and sustainable development. These initiatives are often implemented in collaboration with local authorities, schools, professional organisations, NGOs and community stakeholders, reinforcing the University’s role as an active partner in regional and societal development.

During 2025, the University implemented numerous outreach initiatives engaging schools, citizens, professionals, vulnerable groups and local communities across Cyprus. These activities reached diverse groups including school pupils, teachers, healthcare professionals, farmers, industry stakeholders and members of the general public. The examples below highlight selected outreach initiatives implemented during 2025, illustrating the breadth of CUT’s community engagement activities.

At the institutional level, CUT promotes public dialogue and knowledge exchange through major initiatives such as the Cyprus Forum Cities Conference, organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Limassol, which brings together policymakers, academics, professionals and citizens to discuss sustainable urban development, innovation and governance challenges. Complementing this effort, the Open University Lecture Series provides free public lectures across Cyprus on topics including artificial intelligence, sustainability, digital technologies, entrepreneurship and financial literacy, supporting lifelong learning for citizens. Many of these lectures are organised in collaboration with municipalities and local communities and are delivered both on campus and in regional locations, ensuring broad public participation and accessibility beyond the campus environment.

Several faculties contribute to school engagement and youth education. The University Library organises guided visits, educational programmes and book presentations for school groups, promoting reading culture, information literacy and critical thinking skills. In parallel, the Faculty of Management and Economics coordinates the National Financial Education Programme and the national competition for the International Economics Olympiad, strengthening financial literacy among secondary school students across Cyprus.

CUT also delivers initiatives that strengthen community health awareness and healthcare capacity. The Faculty of Health Sciences organises public awareness activities such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease information conferences and caregiver workshops, as well as specialised training programmes on patient triage for nurses working in emergency departments, supporting both healthcare professionals and families.

Environmental sustainability and climate resilience are promoted through outreach initiatives organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management. These include public lectures such as “Building Resilience in Coastal Communities against Climate Change”, professional training initiatives such as the BuildSkills Academy dissemination event for the construction sector, and community workshops including the Earthquake Self-Protection Workshop organised in collaboration with the Cyprus Civil Defence. Agricultural outreach initiatives such as the Rural Development Conference and sustainability workshops for farmers and agri-food stakeholders facilitate knowledge exchange on sustainable farming practices and climate-resilient agriculture.

CUT also promotes cultural engagement and creative collaboration with local communities. The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts contributes to the Lemesos 2030- European Capital of Culture initiative, supporting the city’s cultural strategy and creative sector through design and visual communication activities. Public cultural events including art exhibitions, film screenings and community art workshops further strengthen interaction between the University and the local community.

Additional outreach initiatives are organised by the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Entrepreneurship and the EUt+ European University Alliance, which host public lectures, workshops, innovation activities and community engagement events addressing media literacy, sustainable tourism, innovation and cultural heritage.

Finally, the University promotes social inclusion and equal access to education through initiatives coordinated by the Diversity and Inclusion Office, including outreach visits and awareness activities involving groups such as students from the Special Education School “Apostolos Loukas”. The Language Centre and the Centre for Lifelong Learning further contribute through public language courses and continuing education programmes that support lifelong learning for citizens and professionals.

Through this broad ecosystem of outreach activities implemented during 2025, CUT ensures that academic knowledge, research and innovation contribute directly to community wellbeing, professional development and sustainable development across Cyprus. These initiatives demonstrate CUT’s role as a civic university that actively contributes to knowledge dissemination, societal resilience and community capacity-building.

CUT systematically monitors and supports community engagement activities through its faculties, academic departments and central services, ensuring that outreach initiatives are implemented on a continuous basis and respond to societal needs. The wide range of initiatives implemented in 2025 demonstrates the University’s long-term commitment to sharing knowledge, supporting local communities and strengthening the societal impact of higher education.
